100 Mbps network to deploy across Malaysian cities

Several of Malaysia’s key cities will soon be covered by a 100 Mbps wireless network to be deployed by the country’s 3G mobile service operator U Mobile Sdn Bhd, in partnership with the equipment and solutions vendor ZTE.

Under the partnership agreement, U Mobile will extend its 42 Mbps mobile network to the central, western and northern areas of the country by the second half of 2011 for the first phase. This will be followed by the installation of LTE platforms which can support 100 Mbps across Malaysia in the very near future.

To achieve ultra-high speeds across the entire network, U Mobile and ZTE recently completed a successful pilot run of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, which is known to support 100 Mbps. The readiness of this technology indicates that once the spectrum is made available to connect LTE-enabled devices, access to 100 Mbps network speeds will follow shortly thereafter.

The deployment of this high-speed wireless network is part of U Mobile’s efforts to support the Government’s national Economic Transformation Program, which aims to improve broadband access across the country.

Dr. Kaizad Heerjee, Chief Executive Officer of U Mobile, and Mr. Zheng Bang, President of ZTE Corporation, Asia-Pacific, signed the official agreement, which was witnessed by Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim, Minister of Information, Communication and Culture of Malaysia and H.E. Mr. Chai Xi, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Malaysia.

“We are very pleased to have ZTE as our strategic partner to enhance and extend our 3G high speed network from the Central Region to other major cities and areas across Malaysia,” said Dr. Kaizad Heerjee, Chief Executive Officer of U Mobile. “Together with ZTE, we aim to deliver the benefits of the highest speed mobile broadband service to our customers.”

With this service, U Mobile subscribers will soon enjoy and experience ease of files transfer and streaming of high quality video to mobile devices and laptop, among others with fastest broadband service at highly affordable rates.
