Billing platform deployed across Telenor’s Asian ops

Three Asian units of the Norwegian operator group Telenor are to share a “unique cross-border billing platform initiative.” The common billing platform is being deployed for the firm’s Thai, Pakistani and Malaysian businesses.

The deployment is aimed at increasing the firm’s ability to adapt to the requirements of its customers, as well as leveraging its scale. With 60 million subscribers between the three business units, the implementation of a common platform was deemed by the firm as “one of the most challenging IT sourcing projects Telenor has ever undertaken.”

Network equipment will be provided by Huawei, which was described by Telenor as “the vendor that best met both the technical and commercial requirements” of the deployment, beating out 22 potential candidates.

Telenor’s EVP of group industrial development Hilde Tonne commented: “It’s a strategic requirement to build flexible systems for billing and charging in an environment where business models are constantly changing. In the future, operators will need to find inventive ways of packaging the new data-based services in a way that consumers find attractive.”
