Two more APAC subsea cable projects announced

Subsea cable activity in the Asia-Pacific region isn’t slowing down any time soon, judging by two recent announcements.

In the past few days, the ALPHA (Asia Link for Advanced Performance of High-Speed Access) Consortium has announced the signing of a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) to plan and develop a proposal for an international undersea cable system connecting Singapore, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam and more.

It appears Indonesia will be acting as a hub for this project. Budi Satria Dharma Purba, CEO of international carrier services company PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin), explains, “Instead of having the hub on the land, we'll have the hub in the sea. Indonesia's waters will be critical in distributing all this traffic to support data centre capacity”.

The ALPHA consortium comprises South Korean telecommunications company KT Corporation (KT), Telin and a number of yet-to-be named Japan-based groups.

The ALPHA cable will offer at least eight fibre pairs with 18 Tbps per fibre pair for a minimum design capacity of 144 Tbps, enabling seamless and high-capacity transmission of data across the East and Southeast Asian regions.

We may get more detail on the project in the third quarter of  this year when procedures for selecting a turnkey supplier and preparation to deliver the contract are expected to begin. The ALPHA cable system is expected to be ready for service by the first quarter of 2027.

This announcement comes about a week after Prima, a telecommunications and data infrastructure company based in Vanuatu, and Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) announced a smart cable project connecting Vanuatu and New Caledonia

The system will provide a supplementary telecom cable to New Caledonia, extending to Australia and Fiji, enhancing digital connectivity. It will also support seismic monitoring in the Pacific region, enhancing security and preparedness against natural disasters.
