China Unicom, NTT DoCoMo to start 3G videophone roaming

Videophone roaming is a reality in China, now that China Unicom have teamed up with NTT DoCoMo. China Unicom has also joined 11 telcos to expand the roaming over an international context...

China Unicom’s Guangdong branch has announced that the company is now officially offering 3G videophone bilateral roaming and interconnection services, along with Japanese NTT DoCoMo. Start-date was January 15, 2010, whenChina Unicom linked with 11 telecom operators on videophone international roaming. This number will continue rising throughout this year.

Among the available 3G networks in China, only China Unicom's WCDMA network is believed to be capable of videophone international roaming at present. China Unicom took the precaution of teaming up with ten telecom carriers in Hong Kong and Taiwan, as well as Macao so as to offer videophone international roaming services.

In order to meet its consumers' communications demands when traveling overseas, China Unicom speeded up its international roaming-service testing and optimisation. China Unicom officially started 3G services on October 1, 2009, and within three months had acquired over 2 million WCDMA subscribers. This latter statistics was announced at the recent China Communications Industry Technology Annual Conference held at the end of December 2009.
