Globe hails island upgrade for growth plan

Globe Telecom hailed milestones in building 276 new cell sites and upgraded 2,509 sites to 4G LTE in the Philippines island of Mindanao in 2023, as part of its strategy to connect new subscribers for growth ambitions.

In a statement, Globe detailed that Mindanao is becoming a ”key economic hub” and the government is investing in infrastructure projects on the island. Globe noted that 76 out of 194 government infrastructure projects are in Mindanao and are worth an indicative cost of PHP 2.4 trillion (US$42 million).

Its strategy is to provide the region with access to digital services that foster economic opportunities, by enabling subscribers to access digital education, health services, and e-commerce, among other digital services.

"With Mindanao's growing economy and the government's commitment to infrastructure, we in Globe remain consistent in optimising our network services to provide the backbone for the region's digital journey.

“Our strategic expansions in Mindanao are aimed at enhancing connectivity, which is essential for fostering growth and uplifting communities in the region,” said Globe Telecom SVP and Head of Network Planning and Engineering, Joel Agustin.

The deployment in Mindanao aligns with the operator’s wider strategy “to foster a competitive economy through enhanced physical and digital infrastructure.”

The operator spent 91% of its US$1.3 billion capex in 2023 towards upgrading its data infrastructure to ensure network resiliency and future-proofing.

Across the Philippines, Globe upgraded 8,226 sites to 4G LTE and commissioned the construction of 1,217 new ones.
