Telkomsel, ZTE launch 5G maritime solution for Indonesian fisherman

Indonesian operator Telkomsel has partnered with ZTE to launch MarineMobile, a 5G-based mobile maritime solution designed to help fishermen boost productivity.

The MarineMobile solution stems from Telkomsel rolling out network improvements in the Gorontalo maritime region using ZTE's i5GC solution designed for vertical industry use cases. MarineMobile utilizes Massive MIMO active antennas that can provide coverage distances of up to 72 km for 2G, 69 km for 4G and 60 km for 5G in open waters.

That mobile broadband connectivity enables fishermen to access weather forecasts, optimal fishing location determination, GPS tracking, and real-time access to direct fish-buyers in the market. This is turn helps fishermen enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency, reduce costs, and increase profits through more precise fishing activities, says Richard Liang, president director of ZTE Indonesia.

“Amidst the various options available, this solution aids fishermen in seamless communication, even in the most challenging maritime environments,” Liang said. “Our collaborative efforts with Telkomsel through the MarineMobile solution aim to empower fishermen to make informed decisions, streamline tasks, and optimize productivity.”

The MarineMobile solution is the product Telkomsel and ZTE’s announced collaboration project in February 2023 to enhance 5G network capabilities in the 2.3 GHz band and test 5G use cases for Indonesia's maritime regions.

Telkomsel and ZTE have been trialling the technology around the coastal areas of Batudaa Pantai sub-district. Telkomsel says this has already resulted in an 11% increase in fish catch volume to a total of 9,070 tons in the second quarter of 2023, compared to the previous year, according to data from the Department of Marine and Fisheries of Gorontalo Regency.
