Axiata brings Ericsson’s cloud core technology to Indonesia

XL Axiata has selected Ericsson to deploy 5G-ready cloud core technology solutions for the operator in East Indonesia. This includes Ericsson Cloud Packet Core and its network functions virtualization infrastructure (NFVI) solution.

Quoting the June 2019 edition of its own Ericsson Mobility Report, the company says that average data usage per smartphone is forecast to increase tenfold on a 5G device in Indonesia.

Not surprisingly, this could prove a major challenge for the Indonesian operator if it isn’t ready. As Yessie D Yosetya, chief technology officer with XL Axiata, says: “Data consumption in Indonesia is growing rapidly and users are constantly looking out for cutting-edge technologies every day.”

Ericsson says its solutions will help XL Axiata to prepare for this increase in data traffic, to simplify operations and to secure 5G revenues.

Relevant in this context is Ericsson Cloud Packet Core, which includes applications such as evolved packet gateway, and allows for a distributed core network architecture to boost network performance in preparation for 5G.

Coupled with NFVI, the new core network will provide XL Axiata with an open and highly flexible solution, capable of deploying new technologies with built-in customizations and novel innovations. This, says Ericsson, will ensure the quick introduction of new services and help deliver an enriched customer experience, while providing full service continuity.

PT XL Axiata Tbk is one of the major cellular providers in Indonesia and part of the wider Axiata Group. XL Axiata began operations in 1996 and now provides a number of digital services for both the consumer and corporate segments.
